While newsletters and one-off campaigns will always have their place in your email marketing strategy, the smartest companies are starting to setup automated email campaigns that trigger off of a user’s actions.
What is email automation?
As opposed to newsletters and one-off campaigns that you create and send to a whole list of people in one go, an automated email campaign is set up once and then automatically sent to a particular individual when that person meets a certain trigger.
For example, Market 2 All offers several triggers: joining a list; entering or exiting a segment (e.g. female, male); on a date; or anniversary of a date (e.g. birthday).
Create your Journey
Once you’ve selected your trigger, you can then start building your journey or sequence of actions. This is what we have set up after a subscriber joins our list:
Choose to send a second campaign hours, days, weeks or months later then tailor the campaigns. Maybe send them a free download as a thank you, then a link to your best blog post, and lastly, a special offer (e.g. 10% off).

You can then see reports on your Journey to identify which stages are working well:
